A SIXTH Port Vale fan has been banned from attending football matches for his part in violence after Replica Hermes the club's final game of last season.

Sabrina Naz, prosecuting, said: "There were 300 people in the crowd and, as they approached the officers, roadwork barriers and cones were being thrown.

"There was a group of men throwing stones and, as this defendant was grabbed, he said 'I cannot argue, the officer saw me do it'."

The court heard Williams said in interview that he was not throwing stones at police but at rival fans.

"He accepted he could have caused injury," added Miss Naz.

The defendant, of Rivington Crescent, pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour on May 5. The court heard he had drunk three bottles of beer on the day of the offence and had no previous convictions.

Williams worked as a binman, employed by Stoke-on-Trent City Council through an agency, the court heard, and hoped the work would become permanent in coming months. He took home Pounds 189 a week.

Nicola Bell, defending, said: "He has been very clear and honest with police about what happened.

"A stone was thrown, but his honesty and frankness has been refreshing and there is every possibility he will not reappear in the court."

Williams was given a 10-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, with 150 hours of unpaid work and a three-year football banning order.

He must also pay Pounds 85 in prosecution costs.

In total, 26 men have appeared in front of the court in connection with the trouble.

The majority have pleaded not guilty and are awaiting trial, but Williams was sentenced after admitting his involvement.

District Judge David Taylor told him: "I have dealt with a number of young men this week after what was a truly dreadful incident in Hamil Road.

"People were chanting and goading the police, while others like you, were arming themselves.

"You were actively involved in a very ugly incident of public disorder.

"It's a puzzle to me that a young man with a supportive family and a job ends up acting in this mob Ysl Shoes way.

"These missiles could have caused serious injury and your conduct could have encouraged others."

The city experiences great weather from June until September, which is when the league's season runs. A team would have a natural rival in Idaho Falls. At roughly 83,000 people in the metro area, Pocatello wouldn't even be the smallest city in the league, ranking just above Great Falls.

Plus, it would give the city extra pride in having a relatively affordable professional sport. If you think there's no value in a professional team, think again. Besides the money it generates for its city, it just makes you feel better about your town.

Of course, it's easier said than done. In order to make something like this happen, Pocatello would need to have three things: community support, someone with enough cash to run the baseball team and a new stadium.

Last week, coming out of London Bridge Station on the south bank of the Thames, I saw a group of commuters peering down from the elevated walkway that leads to Guy's Hospital. They were staring at a deep hole in the ground, where many building workers were scurrying around. This was the base of the Shard, which will be western Europe's highest building when it is completed just over two years from now. (It is being built at breathtaking and, for me, frightening speed.)

This so-called Vertical City, designed by the veteran Italian architect Renzo Piano, will reach over 1000 feet into the South London sky. Gwen Alston' s new career is a far cry from her 20 years as an information systems technician for the Nav y.

POLICE sent out a warning over carrying toy weapons in public after armed police were called out when a group of students were using replica weapons for filming in South Wootton.

Thanks to the dedication of a group of volunteers, Murrysville's gardens will remain growing and blooming for decades to come.

Established in 1952, the Murrysville Garden Club has been toiling to keep the community full of color and charm.

The club is responsible for the planting and maintaining of the Sloan butterfly garden, the gardens at Townsend park, the gardens at the community center and the 9,537 square-foot garden located at the Branthoover cut-off.

The club hosts a bi-annual garden tour, participates in the Export farmers' market and has a scholarship fund that awards one scholarship yearly to a qualified student.

An additional fund was set up for the members of the club themselves, allowing club participants to seek further educational opportunities.

"The money can be used for classes or symposiums," O'Toole said. "We had two members become master gardeners this year."

The club is active in local elementary schools with the Junior Garden Club Earth Team project, which teaches children the appreciation of nature.

The junior teams of students maintain the gardens that are planted at all three schools.

The club also plants a tree every year on Arbor Day, and last year distributed 1,000 pine seedlings to school students and members of the community.

There's no room for a toilet in a hearse. Why would there be?

And it was that detail that led Kenny Jennelle to buy a 1984 Pace Arrow and turn it into a moving, 28-foot, 6-ton replica of the Virginia Tech football lunch pail.

He said his sons did most of the work, but the upholstery was professionally done. It can comfortably seat 10 people.

Game day is typically a 12-hour event, with the lunch pail arriving three or four hours before game time and staying well after the game ends for a post-game feast, usually slow-cooked ribeye.

Kin Jennelle estimates 80 to 100 people join them during a typical tailgate, when they extend tents out from the RV and set up a series of propane heaters. There are two flat-screen televisions, one inside and one outside, getting a signal from a satellite dish.

Several people have come up to the lunch pail when it's parked in Tech's parking services lot near the tennis courts to have their picture taken with it.

Carolyn A. Stephen, Cass Township, died Saturday at Schuylkill Medical Center-East Norwegian Street.

Born in Pottsville, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Doris Cordall Jocken.

She was a 1964 graduate of Minersville Area High School.

She was a machine opera- tor in the local garment industry, having last worked for Fran's Lingerie. She had also been employed at the former Acme Markets, and in the floral department of Trail Gardens, Cressona.

LONG BEACH - Marie Carabine loved life and life loved her, said her son Patrick Carabine.

"She really had a charmed life. She enjoyed life and everybody around her enjoyed her," he said of the longtime Long Beach resident. "She never had a bad thing to say about anybody, and I don't know anybody who said a bad thing about her."

Carabine died March 16. She was 88.

"She went very peacefully," said her son.

The Sacramento native moved to Long Beach during World War II to work as a secretary at the Army Air Force at Daugherty Field.

After the war, she became a secretary for the city of Long Beach. There she met her husband, Robert Carabine, who was working as a detective for the Long Beach Police Department.

The couple cheap coach purses enjoyed going to such places as the Officer's Club, Apple Valley, Victor Hugo's and the Riviera Room during the late 1940 s and '50 s.

"She just really enjoyed life, right to the end," Patrick said. "We always spoiled her and my dad always spoiled her. She used to talk about all the fun her my dad and her had."

Robert Carabine, who spent 30 years with the LBPD in 1977, died makeup brushes in 1997.

According to her son, Carabine was a very stylish and attractive woman, who used to love time with her girlfriends and shopping and walking in the mall.

"She was very beautiful and very youthful-looking for her age," he said. "She had red hair, but of course she had some help with that. She had model good looks in her youth."

When her children were young, Carabine was a constant presence at their sporting events and always made quality time with them a priority.

"When we were growing up, she used to love to drive us to the beach in the station wagon," Patrick said. "She attended sporting events with us. We were all involved in numerous sports in school."

Carabine also treasured her relationship with her grandchildren.

"She used to love going to the grandchildren's sporting events and dance recitals," Patrick said.

"She loved all her grandkids, but she had a special bond with her granddaughter Elizabeth since she lived with my sister Colleen (Elizabeth's mother) for the past four years. Elizabeth loved getting into bed and cuddling with her."

"She was a lot of fun, and she had a great sense of humor," Patrick said. "A week before she passed, I asked her, on a scale of one to 10 how she felt, and she said a 10."

Carabine is survived by her sons Michael and Patrick, daughter Colleen Lovret and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 6220 E. Willow St., Long Beach.

Aeroplane enthusiasts are hoping their bid for a permanent headquarters will finally get off the ground.

Members of the Jet Age Museum have raised pounds100,000 to build a display hangar for its exhibits at Gloucestershire Airport at Staverton. But they need makeup brush more money to make their plans a reality.

Chairman John Lewer said: "The airport has allocated us a two- acre plot and we want to have a proper hangar for our vintage and replica aircraft and also facilities to display papers and photos and other memorabilia.

"We used to have a display in an old hangar here, but that was pulled down in 2001, and since then everything has been in storage."

It will cost pounds270,000 for the new building and the museum has applied for a grant of pounds100,000 from Tewkesbury Borough Council.

The oldest non-ecclesiastical building in Cornwall has been saved from possible ruin.

The Duchy Palace in Lostwithiel has been bought by the Prince's Regeneration Trust, founded by the Prince of Wales.

Sensitive negotiations through Jeffrey's estate agents to buy the former Masonic lodge were kept secret for nearly a year.

Lostwithiel mayor Robert Peareth said: "We are delighted it is out in the open now and I'm sure local people will be thrilled to hear it will be restored to its former glory."

The Grade I listed building is said to have been built as a replica of the Great Hall of Westminster, from around 1265 to 1300, when Lostwithiel was the most important port in Cornwall.

Built from local stone, the palace was regarded as the finest building in Cornwall and housed the Great Hall, the Smelting Houses, the Coinage Hall, the Stannary Courts and the Stannary prison.

In the 14th century, it became the administration centre for the Duchy and the only polling station for the whole of Cornwall.

It fell into ruin in the 17th century and has been owned by the Restormel Lodge of Freemasons since the 19th century. They were faced with highmaintenance costs and considered selling the building.

Cornwall Building Preservation Trust (CBPT) stepped in and asked the Prince's Regeneration Trust, which plans to restore the building's character and medieval architecture, to save it.

Prince's Regeneration Trust CEO, Ros Kerslake, said: "When we saw the palace we decided to do everything we could to prevent it from going on the open market and save it from potential disrepair. It needs work, but it is far from derelict.

"This is a building of prime historic importance that was under threat of being lost entirely to the Cornish community unless we stepped in.

"We can bring our complementary skills and expertise together to protect one of Cornwall's most important buildings for future generations."

The trust will renovate the original kitchen of the Great Hall, which was at one time used as a stannary for Cornish tin.

CBPT carried out a feasibility study earlier this year highlighting the building's importance, and demonstrating possibilities for future use. It will then secure a viable, sustainable long-term use for the historic building.

Consultation involving local people will take place in the coming months and it is hoped by spring 2009, its intended use will be announced.

IT WAS the ship that carried Charles Darwin to the Galapagos Islands nearly 180 years ago, enabling him to make his breakthrough on the theory of evolution.

Now another HMS Beagle will depart on a new voyage of scientific discovery this time with the help of sat-nav, engines and guidance from space.

The Beagle Trust plans to build a [pounds]5 million replica of the 19th-century vessel and use it to research the effects of plankton on the world's oceans.

It will be guided to algae blooms across the globe with the help of Nasa astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

The charity has finalised its plans and is currently raising funds for its project, scheduled to begin construction within months.

"We are making a lot of progress, and I'm confident we will begin building next year, then set sail in 2010," said project director Peter McGrath.

The original HMS Beagle took scientist and naturalist Darwin around the world between 1831 and 1836. The voyage gave him the key evidence he needed to develop his theory of evolution by natural selection.

Dr Karen James, the HMS Beagle Project's director for science, added: "We have explored more of the moon than we have of Earth's oceans, and that's still true even after centuries of ocean exploration including the original Beagle voyages.

Be honest. For all the cards, expensive boxes of Belgian chocolates, trinkets, beribboned frou-frou designer bags of lingerie and even Michelin-starred restaurants, there's only one surefire way of planting a radiant smile on your sweetheart's face on Valentine's Day - and it's nothing more complex than a glorious bunch of flowers.

Suspect accused of eating evidence

WOOSTER -- Mohammed Mustafa, 25, of 4069 Lydgate Drive, North Olmsted, was charged in Wayne County Common Pleas Court with tampering with evidence, falsification and possession of marijuana.

The charges stem from a March 31 traffic stop at the intersection of Madison Avenue and U.S. Route 30 in Wooster.

During the stop, a Wooster Police officer saw and smelled marijuana in the vehicle and Mustafa, who initially gave the officer a false name, was attempting to eat the suspected drug.

If convicted, Mustafa faces five years in prison for the most serious offense.

In Wayne County Municipal Court on another matter, Mustafa was fined $1,000 for failure to reinstate his license. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and may qualify to serve the 30 days on house arrest.

DUI bicycler spared prison time

MILLERSBURG -- A Millersburg man convicted of his seventh DUI was spared a prison sentence in part because the vehicle he was operating was a bicycle.

Russel Cunningham, 41, of 213 W. Jackson St., Apt. B, was sentenced to 90 days in the Holmes County Jail and up to six months at the Stark Regional Correction Center on Wednesday in Holmes County Common Pleas Court.

Cunningham previously pleaded guilty to charges he was riding a bicycle Nov. 4 while intoxicated in Millersburg and pulled out in front of an unmarked police car.

Cunningham's BAC was 0.179, twice the legal limit.

In considering Cunningham's sentence, Judge Thomas D. White noted Cunningham "reduced the risk of harm by, at least this time, not driving a motor vehicle" but noted "it might require as much, if not more skill and balance" to ride a bike as to drive a car.

White said he was moved to a jail sentence, rather than prison because Cunningham has sought treatment for his alcohol problem.

A seventh DUI conviction carries up to 18 months in prison.

City woman who pulled BB gun charged

WORCESTER - A 36-year old city woman allegedly pulled a BB gun that was a replica of a real handgun on two women Wednesday night after she left the scene of a property damage accident on Massasoit Road, police said.

The woman, Christine A. Gignilliat, of 234 Southwest Cutoff, was arrested by police from the Operations Division who noticed a bulge in her waistband and removed the pistol, according to Sgt. Kerry F. Hazelhurst, police department spokesman.

Police said the two women, the unidentified owner of the parked car and a witness who was driving by at the time of the accident, followed Ms. Gignilliat's car, a black Ford, 200 feet up Kenberma Road, where it was stopped. WORCESTER - A man was arrested in connection with the stabbing of a man in the area of 433 Park Ave. near Pembroke Street about 1:10 a.m. today, according to a police radio report.

The victim was stabbed in the chest and was rushed to a local hospital, police said.

Detectives and an evidence recovery crew were summoned.

LEWISTON - A surprise party was held recently for Joseph Roger and Nadette Landry of Lewiston, on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary.
